Finding a Home at St. Paul’s: Jill Clotfelter’s Story

Every parishioner has a story, and every story offers a glimpse into the heart of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In this new series, we're sharing the experiences of the people who call our parish home and the ways God is at work in their lives and in our community.

Home has meant many places for Jill Clotfelter throughout her life. She was born and raised in Idaho before spending several years living overseas as an international educator where she met her husband, McClain. In 2022, they returned to the United States and settled in Columbus to be closer to family. However, one thing was missing: a church home.

"We didn't church-search at all. We chose St. Paul's because I love the Episcopal Church," Jill says. "Our church is a sweet church, and I've been so excited about its growth over the years."

St. Paul's was in a season of transition when Jill first arrived, relying on supply priests while searching for permanent leadership. Even so, she found a congregation that remained faithful through uncertainty. Since then, she's watched the parish continue to grow—welcoming new faces, strengthening its ministries, and moving confidently into the next chapter.

“The people that were the stalwarts are still stalwarting away," Jill says. "But there's continuity now, and a leader. Br. Aelred is one of the most wonderful men ever in his spirit. New people are coming in and giving of their time and talents and having a collective effort, which is very inspiring."

While Jill was drawn to the traditions of the Episcopal Church, it was the warmth of the St. Paul's community that made her feel at home. Years later, she still remembers the welcome she received on one of her first visits. It was a small act of kindness that continues to shape how she thinks about hospitality today.

"I remember getting a St. Paul's mug with tea from a local company in it," Jill says. "They graciously welcomed us with a gift, and that made a big impact on me. Just acknowledging our guests can mean so much."

Over time, Jill found more ways to become involved in the life of the parish. She sings in the choir, plays the organ, and participates in service projects. As a Vestry member and chair of the Worship Committee, she also helps write the Prayers of the People, plan special services, and is currently working with the Vestry to reintroduce healing prayers as part of St. Paul's worship life.

"The Vestry is a group of very thoughtful and wise people," Jill says. "Their care for the church, their love for our parish, and their ability to disagree politely and respectfully and really discuss issues before coming up with a plan has been very inspiring to me."

As St. Paul's celebrates its 150th anniversary, Jill is grateful to be part of a parish that continues to grow while remaining rooted in its traditions. She believes the church offers something many people are searching for: a place where sacred traditions and genuine welcome go hand in hand. It's what made St. Paul's feel like home for her, and it's what she hopes every person experiences when they walk through the church's red doors.

"St. Paul's is excellent. It's a welcoming community where people can get connected and feel a sense of belonging,” she says. "We’re a curious church. On one hand, we seem very old in our worship style, and on the other hand, we're very progressive in our beliefs. We're a real dichotomy between what seem like two separate ways of life, and I hope we continue in that vein.”
